Wado Ryu Shuto Uke

Make sure that there has been a definite shift of your centre of gravity towards the front as you finish your...

...shuto uke jodan. The lead arm should not be held too high, the elbow can be slightly below shoulder level and the arm can be inclined slightly towards the front as well. Think of attacking as opposed to a purely defensive movement.

The movement from gaiwan uke/maegeri to shuto uke should be performed as quickly as possible. Do not pause after the maegeri.

The back hand should be just off the body with about a third of the hand protruding in front of the body. Don't hit yourself with your arm. The hand should be ready to attack or defend.

As you move forward, the lead arm presses down as you body shift and turn. The back arm comes up by the side of your head whilst maintaining a vertical position.

As you body shift, your front foot turns onto its edge. This is part of the process of irimi or entering and also taisabaki.

Your back foot comes straight through to the front. At the same time your right arm sweeps through 90 degrees to complete the shuto uke.

Do not let the right elbow come up high initially. It does not lead the movement. The whole arm and body moves together. Do not think of striking with the edge of the hand.

Even though this may be roughly translated as "knife hand block", think of it as a protective movement that may involve contact with any part of the arm or none at all.

The left hand scoops up into position and is not pulled across or hits the body.
