This
book is a paperback version of Ohtsuka's
book on Wado
Ryu Karate Do. Originally translated and published
as an expensive limited edition hardback, it is now
available is a more readily accessible paperback version.
This
is definitely a book that all Wado Ryu students should
have in their collection.

Dynamic
Kicking Methods by Sensei Shiomitsu 9th Dan Hanshi,
the head of Wado Academy. You could get sensei to sign
your copy on the next course! |
|
Japanese
Master of Karate - This is an excellent tape with
many big names of Japanese karate in it. There is footage
of Shiomitsu Sensei, Hironori Ohtsuka II and the late
Takamizawa Sensei.
A
small piece of vintage footage of the original Grandmaster
and his son is shown. Goju Ryu, Shito Ryu and Shotokan
are also represented.
|
The
Bible of Karate, Bubishi - This is a very good book
giving you quite a lot of information which acted as the
basis of passing the martial traditions from master to
student. |
The
Secrets of Okinawan Karate - This may not be outwardly
a book on Wado Ryu karate, but if you delve into it, the
principles it highlights are very apt and interesting
for students of Wado Ryu. |
|
Karate
Masters - This book is a series of very in depth
interviews with leading figures of the karate world
including top Japanese and Western karateka.
Volume
2 has Seiji Nishimura and Yoshiaki Ajari.
Volume
3 has Tatsuo Suzuki and Jiro Ohtsuka.
|
Miyamoto
Musashi's Book of Five Rings - Anyone wanting to try
and understand the martial spirit within Budo. If you
are planning to take a dan grading within the Wado Academy
then this is one of the books on the list for you essay. |
Essence
of Okinawan Karate Do - This book is good in that
is provides a bit of history directly from someone was
prominent in the development of Okinawan karate. It is
also interesting to compare the katas as performed in
book to the Wado Ryu equivalents. |
Karate
Katas of Wado Ryu by
Sensei Shingo Ohgami- One of the few books available on
Wado Ryu karate. |

I
have really enjoyed the books by Michael Clarke on his
person journey of karate. Once I start his books I just
have to keep reading. I am not normally an avid book
reader myself but I definitely enjoyed his tales of
training around the world.
Roaring
Silence & Small Steps Forward represent an insight
into his early childhood, how he could have easily gone
the wrong way in life, his travels, his building of
dojo and training with the likes of Sensei Tomiyama,
Higaonna and Miyazato. He even has Wado Ryu's Sakai
Sensei visiting his club.
|
| Angry
White Pyjamas by Robert Twigger is also a good read
about the intensity of training, although this is about
Aikido training on the riot police course in Tokyo this
is a facinating read into the full-on committed training
that one endures in such an environment. |
|
There
are many other books and videos on karate from Amazon
UK. The books by Shingo Oghami are useful references,
even more so as there is very little literature available
in terms of Wado Ryu karate. Higaonna Sensei's book
on The History of Karate, even though it focuses on
Goju Ryu, is a very good read as are the books by Clive
Layton on Mitsusuke Harada.
